A Rare Wileman & Co Earthenware Pre-Shelley Vase c.1910
18 18 20A rare Wileman & Co earthenware vase.
This vase has a classic bulb form, with a tapered rim. It is ‘squeeze bag’ decorated with semi-abstract flowers in a beautiful English Arts & Crafts design. The under glaze is a sandy yellow colour and is highly textured. The swirling patterns are a deep chocolate brown, and a dark green over blue, with terracotta coloured berry-like forms.
The mark on this vase dates it to about 1910. The word 'Faience' was the line name.
It is an exquisite example of English Arts and Crafts earthenware pottery.
Historical notes:
Wileman & Co Pottery in Staffordshire, England, opened in 1894 and produced high-quality earthenware using the trade name ‘The Foley’. Wileman & Co was run by the Shelley family, and eventually, they began using the Shelley Pottery Works name in the 1920s. This is the reason Wileman & Co pieces are sometimes referred to as ‘Pre-Shelley’.
